The UL325This is a specification written for the installation of gate operators and their accompanying safety devices. Many municipalities have enacted statutes requiring all installations of gate operator follow these specifications. The specs include requirements for safety edges, and internal overcurrent detection systems, among others. The safety devices required depend on the type of operator being installed, and the type of use for the operator. specification is a set of regulations effecting both gate operators and the gates themselves. These regulations have to do with the capability of the gate to sense an obstruction in it's path, and to react to said obstruction correctly.

These regulations have different levels of classification, depending on where the gate operator is to be installed, and if the gate services the general public or not. The typical self storage application is classified as a "Class 2" installation, which is intended for commercial locations that serve the general public.

A Class 2 slide gate or vertical lift gate operator must have the following safety provisions.

  • An inherent current sensing circuit that can reverse or stop the gate operator when it detects a current "spike".

and at least one of the following:

  • Provision for connection of a non-contact sensor (photoelectric or the like).
  • Provision for connection of a contact type sensor (pneumatic edge or the like).

A barrier arm gate operator, or a swing arm operator, may have an internal adjustable clutch or mechanical pressure relief device as a substitute for one of the above safety devices.

In addition to the gate operator being UL325This is a specification written for the installation of gate operators and their accompanying safety devices. Many municipalities have enacted statutes requiring all installations of gate operator follow these specifications. The specs include requirements for safety edges, and internal overcurrent detection systems, among others. Some of the items to look for are:

  • For slide gates, that the area of the fence that the gate retracts into must be protected as well. This means a secondary beam or edge detector installed on that end of the gate.
  • The gate, and the area of the fence it retracts into or covers, must be screened to a height of 48" by a mesh or pickets designed so that an object of 2-1/4" in size cannot be passed through.
  • Pinch points are eliminated or guarded, and guards on exposed rollers.
  • Gates should be away from structures to help eliminate areas where entrapment could occur.
  • Keypads must be installed at a distance from the gate, so that it is not possible to reach through any opening in the gate or fence to operate them.
  • Warning signs are placed on or in close proximity to the gate so that they are visible to traffic flow from both directions, alerting drivers and others that the gate may move without warning.

Note: The items listed on this page may change at any time, and may be superseded by local codes. It is recommended that you check with your local gate installer and regulators about your specific area and situation.
