We have a list of the recommended wire types for installing PTI manufactured products as well as many of the other access control and security products that we sell to compliment our system.

  • Always refer to local code prior to ordering the wire for your site, as these requirements may be more stringent.
  • We strongly recommend that you purchase the wire for your system from PTI as we have determined the most ideal wire over years of experience and testing.
  • Using the incorrect wire for an application can cause many problems with voltage drop, RF Interference, and ground faults; resulting in lost revenue and greatly increased costs for service, reinstallation, repair, and technical support.
  • Planning and installing the wiring of a site is a process that requires a high degree of technical knowledge; PTI recommends that this be done by a trained professional.
  • If you have questions, please contact our Technical Support Department.

If you would like to purchase any of the wire recommended below that has a PTI part number, please contact our Sales Department representatives by telephone at (800) 331-6224, by email at sales@ptisecurity.com, or by using our Web Store. Items without part numbers are not available for purchase through PTI, but are noted so that other sources may be located.

PTI Power & Data Cables for Remotes (From office to keypads, muxes, relay boards, etc)
Description PTI Part # Belden Wire Code Resistance (In Ohms) Per 1000 Feet
18 awg, 4 conducter stranded copper wire with overall shield and common ground (PVC insulation) WWIR1804S 9418 6.92
18 awg, 4 conducter stranded copper wire with overall shield and common ground (Plenum insulation) 89418 6.92
18 awg, 4 conducter stranded copper wire with overall shield and common ground (Direct Burial) WWIR1804SDB 9552 6.92
16 awg, 4 conducter stranded copper wire with overall shield and common ground (PVC insulation) 5202FE 4.35
1: Standard CAT5 (shielded) cable can be used for RS485A type of communications used for electronic devices. Generally, limited to four thousand total feet of wire length. Used for connecting the Falcon XT to AI Devices. data communications in this system. It cannot be used for power and a separate 18 gauge power wire will be needed to each device.
2: Never use any unshielded wire for data or power to AI devices.
3: Max distance for RS485A type of communications used for electronic devices. Generally, limited to four thousand total feet of wire length. Used for connecting the Falcon XT to AI Devices. data is 4000 feet.
4: Maximum length for power varies. Refer to our page for calculating voltage drop for more information.
Door Alarm Cables (From multiplexer to door switch)
Description PTI Part # Belden Wire Code Resistance (In Ohms) Per 1000 Feet
24 awg, 50 conducter solid copper wire (PVC insulation) WWIR2450 9585 25.67
24 awg, 50 conducter solid copper wire with Aluminum Mylar overall Shield (Direct Burial) 165185110 25.67
24 awg, 50 conducter solid copper wire (Plenum insulation) 25.67
24 awg, 24 conducter solid copper wire (PVC insulation) 9566 25.67
1: Do not use wire smaller than 24AWG for installing door switches.
2: Do not use stranded wire for installing door switches.
3: For door alarm applications that require shielded cable, use the direct burial rated cable.
Cameras and Video
Description PTI Part # Belden Wire Code Resistance (In Ohms) Per 1000 Feet
RG59U / 18 awg power in same cable WWIRSiamese 549945 10.15(Video) / 6.92(Power)
RG59U / 18 awg power in same cable (Plenum) WWIRSiamesePL 649948 10.15(Video) / 6.92(Power)
Coaxial Cable with 22 awg core and braided copper common ground WWIRRG59U 8241 10.15
Coaxial Cable with 22 awg core and braided copper common ground (Direct Burial) 8212 10.15
Coaxial Cable with 22 awg core and braided copper common ground (Plenum) 89259 10.15
18 awg, 2 conducter stranded copper wire with overall shield and common ground (PVC insulation) WWIR1802S 8760 6.92
1: Maximum length for RG59 cable is 750 feet. If you have a run longer than this, you may want to consider using twisted pair wire (2450 or 2210) and Video Baluns which allow the signal to go up to 1200 feet. Two Baluns are needed per camera. This may be a more efficient solution on sites that have many cameras, or may have not installed conduit of sufficient size to accommodate co-ax cables.
Intercoms
Description PTI Part # Belden Wire Code Resistance (In Ohms) Per 1000 Feet
18 awg, 10 conducter stranded copper wire with overall shield and common ground (PVC insulation) WWIR1810S 5345FE 6.92
18 awg, 3 conducter stranded copper wire with overall shield and common ground (PVC insulation) 8770 6.92
18 awg, 2 conducter stranded copper wire with overall shield and common ground (PVC insulation) WWIR1802S 8760 6.92
22 awg, 10 conducter stranded copper wire with overall shield and common ground (Plenum insulation) 6508FE 17.5
22 awg, 4 conducter stranded copper wire with overall shield and common ground (PVC insulation) 8729 17.5
1: Do not use wire smaller than 22AWG for installing intercoms. It is recommended that 18AWG be used for optimal results.
2: Maximum distance using 18AWG is 1600 feet.
3: Maximum distance using 22AWG is 600 feet.

All of the wire gauges shown above are AWG. Below is a table that shows the cross reference to other gauge types.

AWG (American Wire Gauge) SWG / Imperial (British Standard Gauge) Metric CSA (Cross Sectional Area)
16 17 or 18 14 2.50 mm2
18 18 or 19 12 2.00 mm2
20 21 8 or 9 1.50 mm2
